Florida State’s wide receiver room needs to be restructured this offseason after talented, big-framed options like Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson left for the NFL. As a result, the Seminoles signed Alabama’s Malik Benson and LSU’s Jalen Brown through the transfer portal.
When wide receiver coach Ron Dugans was asked after practice Thursday in Jacksonville, Florida, if Malik Benson approved of the role of number one receiver, he responded as follows:
“I would say yes. We challenged him to take on this role. He accepted it. He did a good job. In the last few days I have been pleased with his effort and the things he has accomplished.”
I realize there’s a lot of pressure on Benson after catching 13 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown for the Crimson Tide in the 2023 season, but the Seminoles’ wide receiver rotation is made up of many players who don’t have a lot of experience.
The Alabama transfer has been the most consistent throughout spring, summer and now fall camp. Florida State’s offense will focus on the idea of running the football with their running backs, allowing the strong arm of transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei to be unleashed and showcase his strength.
Now is Benson’s chance to shine. He has a 96 speed rating on the College Football 25 video game for a reason. He could be a real vertical threat for Florida State’s offense. While I’m not saying he’ll be a 1,000-yard receiver for the Seminoles in 2024, I don’t think 600 yards is impossible for an offense that should be able to distribute the football to its playmakers.
