An attacker killed two children and injured 11 others, including six teenagers in critical condition, with a knife at a dance class in northern England on Monday, police said.
A 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in Southport, near Liverpool in northwest England. Two adults were also seriously injured in the attack, Merseyside Police said.
Police Chief Serena Kennedy said the attack was not considered terrorist and the attacker’s motive was unclear.
All of the injured were stab wounds, she added.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the media: “The events today are just truly horrific, the whole country is deeply shocked.”
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victims, their families, friends and the wider community. It is almost impossible to imagine the grief,” he said.
Shortly before midday (11:00 GMT), police were called to a property where a Taylor Swift-themed dance class for young children was taking place, Kennedy said.
Armed officers arrived, arrested the suspect and confiscated a knife.
