Red Bull: Latest news, results, drivers and car updates for 2021
The Red Bull team made its official F1 debut in 2005. However, the origins of the team itself date back to 1997. Back then, they knew themselves as the Stewart Racing Team, a team owned by F1 legend and three-time world champion Sir Jackie Stewart.
He sold the team to American company Ford, who renamed it Jaguar Racing. The iconic British manufacturer raced in the sport until the end of the 2004 season. The following year, Red Bull took the reins. Although they were a mid-table team at best in their early days, the dynamic changed completely in 2009.
Red Bull’s drivers for the 2021 season are Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. Perez takes the place of Alex Albon, the team’s new test driver.
Red Bull: Successes on the track
They had a pretty strong start to their debut season, with David Coulthard finishing fourth in Australia. A year later, he took his first podium at the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix. A few more podiums followed until the team took its first win in 2009, thanks to Sebastian Vettel.
That year, the team took six wins and finished second in the championship. Then came the masterpiece: four drivers’ and constructors’ titles in a row, all thanks to Sebastian Vettel.
Red Bull’s dominant phase in Formula 1 ended with the beginning of the turbo-hybrid era in Formula 1. Although the team still takes the occasional pole position or victory, it has not yet managed to repeat its dominance from the early 2010s.
As of September 2020, the team had 64 race wins, 182 podium finishes and four drivers’ and constructors’ championships in F1. The team has competed in 304 races and accumulated a massive score of 5043.5 points.
Does Red Bull have two F1 teams?
Part of what makes Red Bull such a unique F1 operation is its connection with Scuderia AlphaTauri. AlphaTauri, formerly known as Toro Rosso, is the Italian sister team to the Austrian outfit.
Red Bull Racing does not necessarily own AlphaTauri. Technically, both teams belong to the famous beverage manufacturer Red Bull GmbH. The Austrian company’s founder, Dietrich Mateschitz, first bought Red Bull (formerly known as Jaguar) and then Toro Rosso (formerly known as Minardi) in a collaboration with former F1 driver Gerhard Berger.
Unofficially, AlphaTauri acts as a testing ground for Red Bull’s younger drivers who have the potential to step up and drive for Red Bull Racing.
How much did Red Bull spend on F1?
The team reportedly invested $335 million in its F1 projects for the 2019 season.
How much does Red Bull earn from F1?
As a reward for its efforts, the Milton Keynes-based team received prize money of around $335 million for the 2019 season. Although the Austrian team did not record a large profit, they fortunately did not record a loss either.
The FOM share of the $335 million is reportedly $150 million (including bonuses).
What is Aston Martin doing for Red Bull?
At the end of 2017, the team announced Aston Martin as the team’s title sponsor as part of a technical partnership. The Milton-Keynes-based team has worked closely with Aston Martin to produce the Valkyrie hypercar.
“The relationship between Aston Martin and the team began in 2016 after the two companies combined cutting-edge F1 technology and Aston Martin’s signature sports car design to produce a groundbreaking hypercar,” says a statement from Red Bull.
In early 2020, the team announced that it would end its title partnership with Aston Martin after the 2020 F1 season. However, the Austrian team will work with the British manufacturer to implement its Hypercar cooperation.
