Stephanie King is an interdisciplinary consultant for the Fleet & Family Support Center (FFSC) Rota.
“Because we are located on a small overseas base, FFSC counselors have many different responsibilities,” King said. “We primarily provide counseling and case management services, identify and support crisis situations, work with command, medical and other stakeholders, support education and training on mental health, domestic violence and suicide prevention, and handle a lot of paperwork.”
As part of the Counseling Advocacy and Prevention (CAP) team, King and her colleagues provide non-medical counseling and family advocacy services to the Naval Station Rota (NAVSTA) community.
King, from southern Maryland, knew she wanted to work in mental health since high school because the profession would give her “a great sense of purpose and be able to help others.” Growing up in a military community, she was also interested in working with service members and their families.
“In 2016, I applied to be a therapist in the Marine Corps and began my position at Marine Corps Recruiting Depot (MCRD) Parris Island,” she said. “Here, I worked primarily with instructors, their families and recruits, providing individual, couples and group therapy.”
King accepted a position at NAVSTA Rota and arrived at the facility in January 2023. She enjoys her work here and is honored to help Soldiers and their families prioritize their mental health.
“I enjoy talking to people about the things that really matter to them and working with my clients to help them find solutions,” she says.
In her free time, King enjoys traveling, doing yoga, cooking, hiking, walking, or spending time in her garden with her husband and dog. She also enjoys sampling local cuisine.
“I love the fresh croissants and the coffee, it’s one of the best things about living here,” said King. “The weather and the friendly people too!”
As the “Gateway to the Mediterranean,” NAVSTA Rota serves U.S., NATO and allied forces as a strategic hub for operations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. NAVSTA Rota is a force multiplier capable of rapidly deploying and supporting combat-ready forces by land, air and sea, supporting Soldiers and their Families, sustaining the fleet and promoting the U.S.-Spanish partnership.
