WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – It’s been a bumpy week across the Cape Fear Region! As expected, Tropical Storm Debby brought a handful of tornadoes and funnel clouds, peak gusts between 40 and 50 mph, and 8 to 14 inches of rain with locally higher totals. Over the weekend and into next week, your First Alert Weather Team will be monitoring minor to moderate river flooding across the region. These events may be locally disruptive, but are not expected to be comparable to those associated with hurricanes in recent memory.
When Debby and its remnants eventually disappear north of the Carolinas, your First Alert Forecast for the weekend will return to more typical August fare. Yes, unfortunately, this includes isolated rain and storm accumulations as the atmosphere holds some frontal energy and, of course, there is still plenty of moisture left. Aside from thunderstorm cells, you can look forward to a mix of clouds, sunshine, moist breezes, daytime highs between 27 and 32 degrees and nighttime temperatures around 21 degrees. An increased risk of surf rip currents is also likely at times.
Elsewhere in the tropics, a disturbance will be seen midway between Africa and the Caribbean islands next week. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting a solid chance of development and many computer models appear to have a good chance as well. Most of those models predict this event will eventually move away from North America, but again, this is the time of year to watch.
