Beaumont-sur-Mer — Bingman Elementary opened its doors on Thursday, August 8th for a meet and greet with students and parents.
On the first day of school, Monday, August 12, parents will not be allowed to enter the school premises with their children at any of the district’s elementary schools.
Dr. Anita Frank is deputy head of the elementary school administration.
“We want to have a safe and smooth start to the school year. There is a lot going on on the first day of school and this day enables us to do that,” said Frank.
The county approved the restrictions four years ago but will enforce the rules this year.
“On the first day of school, we will have staff on site, we have pickup procedures that we have communicated to parents, and we will follow those procedures,” Frank said. “This is part of our smooth launch.”
The district says the restrictions are intended to ensure safety as well as prevent interruptions and distractions.
“We start classes on the first day so that when students enter the classroom, they have time to build a relationship with their teachers and start learning,” Frank said.
One mother, Brittanie O’Haver, is not so sure about this rule.
“I wish I could pick her up or come by at least once a day so I could ask her teacher how her day was, how she is doing, how her discipline is going, if she has been listening. But I won’t have that opportunity,” O’Haver said.
Others, like James Scott, think it’s a good idea.
“It just stops random people from pulling kids out of school after all the school shootings we’ve had over the last few years and all these other crazy situations,” Scott said.
The district states that the rule includes morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.
Parents are always welcome on campus outside of the stated times, according to BISD.
