Last year, Peter Comeau was a guest on the Darko.Audio podcast to dispel what he believes are the ten biggest hi-fi myths – you can read all about them here – and Comeau said he enjoyed the experience so much that he wanted to return to dispel another ten. And here we are, ten months later, with nine more hi-fi myths from Comeau and one from me, making ten in total.
1. $5,000 is way too much for a pair of speakers
2. Subwoofers are essential if you want to hear deep bass
3. A 100W amplifier is louder than a 75W amplifier
4. My amplifier says I need to use 8 ohm speakers
5. Belt-drive turntables are best
6. You cannot place rear-mounted speakers against a wall
7. Speakers with lots of details sound best
8. Mains filters are a waste of money
9. DSP room correction is necessary for audiophiles
10. Everyday furniture is just as effective as acoustic panels attached to walls and ceilings
What qualifies Comeau to dispel myths spread by amateur experts on forums and comment columns? Fifty years of experience in professional (and not just amateur) loudspeaker design. Comeau founded Heybrook, worked for Mission and is now Director of Acoustic Design at IAG. This Chinese company owns and manages classic British hi-fi brands such as Wharfedale, Mission, Castle, Audiolab and Quad.
