In the hit British TV show “Race Across the World,” teams of two compete to travel vast distances around the world by means other than air travel. The catch is that they are not allowed to own mobile phones or credit cards and can only take as much money as a flight would have cost. Instead, they must beg, blackmail and charm their way to win.
It turns out that season three champions Tricia Sail and Cathie Rowe are very good at all three areas.
In this episode of Wanderlust: Off the Page, we accompany the two on a 10,000-mile journey through Canada and get a unique behind-the-scenes look at the ups, downs, and hilarity of life on the road, with almost no money and even less of a clue.
From Vancouver, we race north to the Haida Gwaii Islands, the wild frontiers of the Yukon and the icy Arctic of Churchill. We visit the Rocky Mountain towns of Jasper and Banff, discover the vast prairies of Saskatchewan, the European flair of Quebec and much more.
Canada is one of the largest and most diverse countries in the world, and this may be the ultimate trip across the country. But it’s also a story about throwing away the guidebook, turning off the cell phone, and experiencing the surprises and misadventures of a true adventure trip.
“If we hadn’t had to ask for rides,” says Cathie, “or work because we didn’t have enough money, we wouldn’t have met the people we met along the way who blew us away with their generosity and willingness to help.”
