When it comes to learning about the schools of the wizarding world, we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface. One of the schools we have confirmed information about is the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This school was founded centuries ago in North America on the summit of Mount Greylock in Massachusetts. JK Rowling confirmed the origins of Ilvermorny on Pottermore, but what would Ilvermorny look like in today’s age of diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility? Let’s explore how Ilvermorny would function as a modern wizarding school.
Food Court Dining Area
While students at Hogwarts eat buffet offerings in the Great Hall, Ilvermorny’s dining area would be best suited as a food court. The space would offer different types of food from different cultures and students would be able to choose what they wanted to eat each day. Not to mention a cafe area offering butterbeer lattes, chocolate frogs, and pumpkin pies!
Focus on accessibility
Ilvermorny’s dormitories, common rooms, and the entire learning environment in the castle will be made accessible to people with physical, hearing, and visual impairments. Ramps and elevators will be installed instead of escalators as the main mode of transportation in the castle. Books will be available in Braille and large print, all videos will have clear subtitles, students will be offered text-to-speech tools and hearing aids, and sign language interpreters will be present at school-wide events.
Added classes
The students of Ilvermorny already take an extensive course load in the field of magic, but they would also benefit from non-magical courses in their weekly schedule.
- Ilvermorny has Celtic and Native American roots. Intensive courses in the history and mythology of these cultures would underline Ilvermorny’s origins.
- For the school’s actors, acting courses would prepare those who yearn to be on stage in Ilvermorny’s fall, winter and spring productions.
- Do you like painting or drawing? In art courses you will learn about the style and history of famous magicians and your students can create their own masterpieces.
- Physical and mental health classes teach students how to manage stress—especially when studying for OWLs—and how to prioritize their well-being and self-love.
Fitness center
Whether they’re working out on their own or working on their skills in team training, a fitness center for the students of Ilvermorny just makes sense. From yoga classes to weight machines to a running track, the space would be available to all students. Ilvermorny would also have a long list of teams to join. As well as a Quidditch match, we’d love to see a magical tennis tournament or performances from the house dance teams!
New pet options
In the wizarding world, cats, toads, owls, and the occasional rats are allowed as pets at Hogwarts. However, since Ilvermorny is in North America, other pets are likely to be allowed to live in the castle as well. These include popular animal friends that live in houses today, such as dogs, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, and fish.
