London-based plugin developer Physical Audio has released a new and updated version of its physical modeling synthesizer Preparation.
You may remember when the brand launched Preparation in 2022, a “next-generation collision modeling” plugin that simulates the interactions of strings and bars colliding with objects.
Preparation 2 is now described as a “rewritten from the ground up” based on the company’s latest physics modeling techniques. New features include a dynamic fret object, new controllable properties for rattle and fret, an effects suite, and dual LFOs.
Preparation 2 consists of two physically modeled strings or bars colliding with a rattle and a dynamic fret. The user can stimulate the strings with a plucked instrument, a bow, or external audio via a sidechain input.
Users can set string and bar characteristics with controls for sustain, tone, inharmonicity, gain, pan, and nonlinearity/tuning.
There are also “comprehensive” customization options for the fret and rattle, with controls for position, spacing, mass, stiffness and edge.
Preparation 2’s effects suite includes an EQ, compressor, tremolo, phaser, VCF, wah, distortion, drive, fuzz, delay and reverb. Two LFOs can modulate rattle/fret characteristics and/or effect controls.
There’s also keyboard and velocity modulation for string and rattle characteristics, a detailed pluck designer for adjusting range and low/high sensitivity, MIDI integrations and MPE functionality, attack, boost and release controls, and – if you want to get started right away – over 160 available presets.

Preparation 2 is available now in VST3, AU and AAX formats for Mac and PC at an introductory price of £48/$59. For more information visit Physical Audio.
