The first conversion of a Harveys Supermarkets branch in Jacksonville to an Aldi is underway.
Aldi announced it would acquire the Winn-Dixie and Harveys grocery stores from Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers in August 2023. The sale of those stores to the Germany-based grocery store chain was completed in March, and Aldi announced a five-year expansion plan that calls for adding 800 stores to its brand nationwide.
TD Farrell Construction Inc. of Alpharetta, Georgia, recently submitted a permit application for the Harveys Supermarket at Edgewood Square, located at 2261 Edgewood Ave. in northwest Jacksonville.
This will be the first store remodel in Jacksonville resulting from the merger.

The 4,350-square-foot space is twice the size of a typical Aldi store, which is around 2,000 square feet. The project plans to use only half of the available space, with an estimated cost of $1.7 million.
There are currently no plans for the unused areas that will be freed up by the renovation.
“As we work through this transition period, transition plans are still being finalized and we will share more information as it becomes available,” an Aldi spokesperson said. “To ensure a smooth transition for our associates, (Southeastern Grocers) will continue to work diligently with Aldi to provide support and opportunities to every associate in the transitioned stores, including the opportunity to be first in line to apply for roles in newly transitioned ALDI stores or to stay with Harveys Supermarket and transfer to a neighboring store.”
There are about 40 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores in Northeast Florida, but Aldi declined to say which ones will convert to the Aldi format or if any will close. Aldi — whose U.S. headquarters are in Batavia, Illinois — currently operates at least 13 stores in Northeast Florida, including eight in Jacksonville.
Before acquiring Southeastern Grocers, the company had about 2,400 stores in the U.S. Aldi began converting stores in mid-2024, including the first in Florida in Panama City and Lakeland.
About 50 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores are scheduled to reopen as Aldi stores in 2025.
