YEAR 2 OF THE MINOR LEAGUE CONTROVERSY
Charlie De Biase Jr. | [email protected]
So much for the hope that Little League’s experiment of using rotating lineups in its baseball and softball all-star tournaments would last only a year.
We are currently in the middle of the second year. And for me it is still the last.
I cannot for the life of me understand why such a successful organization would promote playing the games the wrong way.
Because let’s face it, it’s 100% not being played right, and as I said on these pages a year ago, don’t tell me “it’s just Little League” or “they’re just kids.” If you think winning doesn’t matter, you’re dead wrong. The truth is, it matters to a lot of people, and not just the players and coaches.
Knowing that victory is of utmost importance to the masses, the question arises whether the games should not be played properly?
Charlie’s Take: Will Little League’s decision to implement “rotational lineups” affect All-Star Tournament play? It certainly looks like it will.
Baseball and softball games feature a nine-batter lineup. You put your best hitters at the top of the lineup so they can bat as often as possible. When you’re at bat number 9 in your lineup, you know you’re one batter away from getting back to the top of your batting order and that your big guns will soon be stepping into the batter’s box.
