Due to his elbow problems, Loewen became an outfielder, playing between first base and the outfield. He made his major league debut as an outfielder in 2011 with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he had six hits and one home run in 32 at-bats. During his time in the minor leagues, he moved between several organizations.
Loewen returned to the mound with the Phillies in 2014. Over the next five seasons, he spent most of his time in Triple-A with the Phillies, Diamondbacks and Rangers, although he did make a few brief appearances in the major leagues.
He played his last professional game in 2018.
Internationally, Loewen has competed for Team Canada in numerous tournaments, including the World Baseball Classic (2006, 2013 and 2023), the Baseball World Cup (2013), the Pan American Games Qualifier (2019) and the WBSC Premier12 Tournament (2019).
As a high school student, Loewen also threw a no-hitter against the Pirates in the Dominican Summer League.
For his achievements at the international level and his outstanding professional career, Loewen was inducted into Baseball Canada’s Wall of Excellence last year.
