ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – August is Black Business Month, and every Thursday this month, KALB will feature a different Black Business in Cenla!
JAM’s Bakery is a bakery operated out of a private home in Alexandria.
They bake custom cakes, sponge cakes and sweets, among many other desserts, including their most popular baked good, the 7Up Pound Cake.
Owner Gregory Scott said he started the business in 2016 to finance his final semester of college, but because of his love of baking, he decided to keep it going and now runs it full-time.
Scott said the name of his business came from the middle names of his niece and nephew, which together made up the name “JAM’s Bakery.”
He said the opportunity to serve central Louisiana is a chance to give back to the community where he grew up and that made him who he is today.
His love of baking began as a child when he spent a lot of time in the kitchen with his grandmother, learning her recipes and baking with her.
“I’ve always loved baking,” Scott said. “As a kid, I grew up with my grandmother, who has since passed away. I was the only grandchild who was always in the kitchen with my grandmother, loving to bake, always paying attention to her recipes and everything. So when I was faced with the challenge of having to pay for my last semester of college, I didn’t know what to do. Then an idea came to me: ‘Well, I love to bake, this is something I’m good at.’ So I decided to do that. I really got the support of my friends and family to go even further and start my own business.”
Scott said he wanted to encourage everyone to pursue their dreams and not give up.
To place an order from JAM’s Bakery of Alexandria, all you have to do is send them a message through their social media pages. That’s JAM’s Bakery of Alexandria on Facebook and @jamsbakeryofalex on Instagram.
