One of the most surprising aspects of Marvel’s From the Ashes reboot of the X-Men comic book series was the revelation that Storm would not only get her own ongoing series, but would also become a member of the Avengers. She made her debut as an Avenger earlier this month, and Marvel has now given CBR an exclusive first look at Storm’s first mission with the Avengers, where she will be tasked with finding a way to stop the seemingly unstoppable Hyperion!
Next month avenger #18 follows the dramatic turn of events in avenger #17, where the Avengers following the team feeling dejected thinking about all the innocent lives lost during the Blood Hunt began arguing with each other about whether losing a thousand lives when one had successfully saved billions of lives was really a “failure”. Captain America turned to Storm for her opinion and she assuaged his guilt a little by stating that if the Avengers couldn’t do anything else, how could they blame themselves? However, this makes Captain America realize that the Avengers definitely failed in protecting Earth’s mutant population from Orchis and that one failure of the team was that there was not a large mutant presence on the team, so he asked Storm to join the Avengers and she agreed.

The first preview pages show the Avengers being introduced to their new teammate, on a beautiful page by artist Valerio Schiti, who became the Avengers’ new regular artist with the last issue. You might notice, though, that the Avengers all look rather glum while staring at a clock. That’s because the OTHER big twist in the last issue was that Hyperion has decided to destroy the Earth. He flies on a collision course with the planet, essentially turning into a human super-sphere.

X-Men’s Storm, explained
Storm is one of the most powerful members of the X-Men, but who is she and what is her history in Marvel Comics? Here’s everything you need to know.
What connection do the X-Men have to this topic?
Jed MacKay, author of The Avengersis also the author of X-Menone of the flagship titles in the X-Men series, and so on the next preview page we see Storm talking things through with Cyclops. Perhaps Storm is simply talking about her decision to join the Avengers, or the two heroes are discussing how best to stop Hyperion.
Finally, the final preview page shows Hyperion on his fatal journey to Earth. Hyperion was a creation of Mephisto, and briefly the entire world was changed so that Hyperion and his Squadron Supreme were the greatest superheroes in the world. Now that that’s over, his mind has become confused about his place in the world and he’s decided that if his life is a lie, he might as well destroy the Earth.
You must check out avenger #18 next month to see how Hyperion is stopped.
