Montgomery County received more than $2.6 million to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at up to 17 locations.
The $2.68 million grant comes from the Maryland Department of Transportation and is part of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHA) Carbon Reduction Program, according to a press release Thursday.
The locations for charging stations would be district-owned sites, including parking garages, park-and-ride spaces, libraries and community centers.
The county will work with the state transportation agency to select locations for charging stations “that are strategically located to meet the needs of residents and businesses.”
In a written statement, County Executive Marc Elrich said, “We applaud President Biden and Maryland Governor Moore for their leadership in providing the funding to make the transition to electric vehicle use more widely accessible. This grant is a significant step forward in our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable transportation in Montgomery County. By expanding access to electric vehicle charging stations, we are making it easier for residents to use electric vehicles and reduce their carbon footprint.”
