He was born December 15, 1947 in Mason City, IA to William and Minda Askelson Martin. Harlan was the ninth child and grew up on the family farm in northern Iowa. He helped milk the cows, feed the pigs, horses and geese, and worked baling hay. He would ride his dog along the Cedar River or the quarry to go fishing or swimming with friends. He also loved working on cars and driving them as often as possible.
Harlan married Linda Rezab. They were blessed with two sons, Ted and Chris. Harlan worked hard at various jobs to support his family. While working at Armour Dial, he moved from Plymouth, IA to South Dakota, then to Montrose, IA where they raised Ted and Chris until they moved to the farm south of Donnellson. Harlan and Linda later divorced. Harlan later married Kelly (Tuttle) Gard on June 7, 1997. They continued to live on the farm with their daughter Cordelia “Cory” Martin. Harlan loved animals, fishing, and classic cars, but even more, he loved sharing his knowledge of these things with his family and friends over the years. He was always telling stories, jokes, or playing pranks whenever he had the chance. He never knew a stranger and always had a smile on his face. He loved making people laugh. Harlan loved life and enjoyed every minute, especially when he was with family and friends. He was devoted to his family and was there for them whenever possible.
