HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – After a line of showers and thunderstorms moved through parts of Eastern Kentucky this morning, the chance of rain and thunderstorms remains in the forecast for tonight and into the day Saturday.
Headlines:
– Finally … rain
– Temperatures still above 30 degrees on Saturday
– Much cooler on Sunday.
DISCUSSION:
As predicted, the day began this morning with isolated showers and thunderstorms. This will continue in the evening and overnight hours and on Saturday.
A warm sector lies ahead of a cold front, which will ensure that temperatures rise again to over 30 to under 35 degrees on Saturday. In some places, the heat indices could again be between 35 and over 35 degrees.
Then the front will move through, keeping showers and thunderstorms still possible, but cooling us down considerably on Sunday, Monday, and even into the day on Tuesday, with highs between 25 and 27 degrees. If we reach highs of 21 degrees on Monday (or even Sunday in some places), it will be the first time since July 1 that we’ve reached just 21 degrees. Our high that day was 24 degrees.
Severe risk and rainfall
There is a slight risk of severe weather on Saturday (level 1 of 5), and strong winds and heavy lightning are expected on Friday. Light hail is certainly not out of the question.
As for total precipitation, some locations could easily get an inch or more of rain through Saturday. The latest precipitation forecast calls for most of us to get about an inch of rain.
The First Alert Weather Team will be keeping an eye on weather conditions tonight and Saturday. Now is a great time to make sure you have the WYMT First Alert Weather App on your mobile device to get information for your location.
