CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WTVD) – A Charlotte-area garbage worker has inspired everyone with his work ethic and commitment to helping others.
Tropical Storm Debby has downed trees in the Bramble Place neighborhood in western Charlotte.
The access road to the residential area was blocked by a fallen tree. But that didn’t stop the unknown garbage man.
Neighbors said they saw him walking from driveway to driveway, picking up trash cans, rolling them to the main street and throwing them into the garbage truck.
During one of his runs, he noticed two children who needed help.
A tree was uprooted and fell on the roof of a family’s house.
“Their whole front door is completely blocked, I don’t know how anyone got in. They tried to get in through a side window because it’s so difficult to get in,” neighbor Jimmy Johnson told local ABC affiliate WSOC.
The garbage man immediately intervened and helped a seven- and eight-year-old boy get out of the house and into their family’s car.
“The garbage man was already here and helped the children out of the house and took them to the car so they were safe while the parents were inside packing up their things,” Johnson said.
Neighbors said the adults in the family were then able to safely rescue their belongings from the house.
“Who knows what would have happened if he hadn’t been willing to crawl under the tree, go to the door, ask if everyone was OK and get everyone out,” Johnson said. “When we see something like this, it kind of restores faith in humanity.”
