Bernice King, daughter of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., criticizes Donald Trump for comparing himself to her father.
While speaking at a press conference, Trump compared the size of his crowd to the crowd at Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech. “Nobody has spoken to bigger crowds than I have,” he said. “Look at Martin Luther King when he gave his speech, his great speech. And look at ours: same lot, same everything, same number of people. If not, we had more.”
He added, “Look at it, and look at the picture of his audience, of my audience, there were actually more people.” Trump went on to say that he “likes” Dr. King.
However, Dr. King’s infamous speech reportedly reached nearly 250,000 listeners, while Trump’s “Stop the Steal” speech only had 53,000 listeners. Bernice King did not like Trump’s comments and raised the issue on social media.
“Absolutely not true,” she wrote. “I really wish people would stop using my father as evidence of their errors.”
The NAACP also spoke out and responded to Trump’s claims. They posted side-by-side photos of the crowd in 1963 when the “I Have A Dream” speech was given and the crowd at Trump’s speech. “More importantly, MLK’s speech was about democracy. Trump’s speech was about tearing it down.”
