In the space of 24 hours, the Harris-Walz campaign has proven it can easily keep up with online culture: Using the speed of the internet, it launched a line of camouflage trucker hats β based on a social media user’s viral design β that have sold like hotcakes. The campaign told Teen Vogue on Wednesday that it has already raised over $1 million from sales of the hats, which retail for $40. An initial run of 3,000 hats sold out in half an hour, the campaign added. Where did this theme come from, with the orange letters and camouflage pattern? Well, just minutes after Vice President Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, he was being dubbed the “Princess of the Midwest” on the internet, a reference to the title of pop star Chappell Roan’s debut album. Roan sells baseball caps with the name “Midwest Princess” in camouflage and orange lettering, and it wasn’t long before an X user posted “Listen to me…” next to a suggested “Harris Walz” version. Less than twelve hours later, Walz himself was wearing a prototype and his team posted a picture of the smiling governor under a camouflage cap. “To round off the evening” the contribution along with a link to the new clothing. Roan himself reacted to the rapid turnaround, tweet on Tuesday evening: βIs this real?β
