KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) – A student in Tennessee was seriously injured when she was hit by a car while waiting for her school bus.
According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, a student was struck by a car at a school bus stop Thursday morning.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with this student and her family. We cannot stress enough how important it is for drivers to be cautious early in the morning and in the afternoon when students are walking to and from the bus stop,” said Dr. Jon Rysewyk, superintendent of Knox County Schools.
Knox County authorities said the crash, which was a hit-and-run, occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Thorton and Hughlan Drive.
“A passerby noticed the woman lying on the ground around the same time the school bus arrived,” said Kimberly Glenn of Knox County Schools. “The victim was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.”
The underage girl suffered serious injuries in the collision and is still in hospital, according to the school.
Thursday was also the first day of school for the school district.
“I would like to call on the entire community to help us keep students safe on their way to school this year,” Rysewyk said.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office asks anyone with further information to call 865-215-2243.
