i’s chief football editor Daniel Storey has discussed the possibility of midfielder Ilkay Gündogan returning to Manchester City.
Storey believes the move is logical given his knowledge of Pep Guardiola and his coaching philosophy.
“I think if Gundogan wants to come back, one of the reasons he left was because there were discussions about the length of his contract (to stay at City),” Storey told the Monday Night Club. “It was also about Gundogan remaining a key player at Manchester City.”
“He’s a year older. He did quite well at Barcelona but it wasn’t quite the dream transfer he was hoping for. Now when he comes back he’ll be better prepared to be a substitute who fits into central midfield and links the play. We know he can do that brilliantly.
“Manchester City already look like they have managed to get through games with 70% and win 1-0 or 2-0. That somehow fits with Gündogan’s control.
“In recent years in Manchester he has been remarkable in that advanced central midfield role. He doesn’t need any time to settle into the system, the club, the country – that’s a clear advantage. For me it makes perfect sense.”
