Among the many adaptations of Stephen King’s works in development is The long roadand the more I hear about it, the more excited I am about it and the more hopeful I am that it will succeed. Stephen King’s short stories and novels continue to inspire countless artists and are still a great resource for filmmakers. Various adaptations of King’s works are constantly in development, and many of them have overcome many obstacles that have delayed the projects. This is the case for The long roadwhich had a complicated pre-production process.
Set in a dystopian America ruled by a totalitarian regime, The long road follows Ray Garraty, a 16-year-old boy who takes part in the “Long Walk.” This is an annual walking competition in which 100 teenagers run non-stop down US Route 1, each of them having to maintain a speed of over four miles per hour – if they go below this speed for 30 seconds, they receive a warning and after three seconds they are shot. The long road is finally being made into a film and it’s getting more and more exciting.
The long road
was published in 1979 under King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman and is his first novel, although not the first to be published.

The long road
seems to be on the right track with its temporal setting, but at the same time represents a change from the novel.
It is not uncommon for Stephen King’s stories to undergo various changes when adapted for the big screen – just think of Andy Muschietti’s It Duology that featured a time shift and other narrative modifications, but all of which ultimately benefited the films. The long roadseems to be on the right track with its timing, although this is a change from the novel. As mentioned above, The long road is set in a dystopian future, but the novel was published in the late 1970s.
Some photos from the set of The long road show some cars, trucks and military vehicles in the style of the 1970s, which suggests that The film remains true to the 1979 novelHowever, it remains to be seen whether The long road will keep its futuristic elements, but since these are central to the story, they will certainly still be a part of it despite the setting in the 1970s. Another thing about The long roadBut what makes the film even more exciting and gives me a lot of hope for its success is the tone and the plans of the team behind it.
After many obstacles during pre-production, The long road is now directed by Francis Lawrence from a script by JT Mollner and filming finally began in July 2024. In conversation with CinemaBlend In August 2024, Mollner spoke about what he and Lawrence were working on, saying Lawrence wanted The long road “the right way, a faithful way“. Mollner promised a faithful, R-rated adaptation of the noveland added that King was determined to give the film an R rating.
The cast of
The long road
is founded by Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Charlie Plummer, Judy Greer and Mark Hamill.
Over and beyond The long road has an incredible cast that makes me even more excited and gives me so much hope that it will be as good as Mollner has hinted. Although the character details have not been revealed yet, the casting of The long road consists of Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Charlie Plummer, Judy Greer and Mark Hamill. The latter is particularly exciting for me, not only because it’s Hamill, but because he’s rumored to be playing the Major, one of the most sinister characters in the novel.

“The Long Walk” could be one of the best Stephen King adaptations of recent years

The film adaptations of Stephen King’s novels and short stories were sometimes a gamble, sometimes a flop, because not all authors and directors managed to successfully transform the novels and short stories into reality.
Stephen King’s works are very popular, but the stories that are successful on paper are not always successful on the screen. Film adaptations of Stephen King’s novels and short stories have been hit or miss, not because they have no audience, but because not all writers and directors have been successful in bringing them to life, and some have made too many changes that have not helped. As far as we know, The long road So far, I would say that the film has a great chance of being successful and becoming one of the best King adaptations in recent years.
The fact that The team behind it is determined to make a faithful adaptation that maintains the dark and violent tone of the novel and is not afraid to bring its most brutal scenes to life, is a good sign for The long roadThis has already been confirmed by David Jonsson, who in an interview with GQshared how “beautifully brutal” Filming The long road and revealed that he walks around 22.5 kilometers every day during filming.
This dedication to adapting this story, the cast and the setting make me more and more excited about The long road and I’m more confident that it will be successful. It will be interesting to see what other details emerge as the production process progresses.
