Goia Paranoia – Black Out (BlackValley Records)
20 August 2024
I’ve always had a somewhat complicated relationship with the heavier side of music. It’s not that I’ve turned my back on it completely, but a lot of it doesn’t seem to excite me as much as it once did. But hey, that’s on me, not the music. We all grow, we all change, and maybe I’ve just been away from that thunderous landscape for too long.
And then comes “Black Out”, the debut song by Goia Paranoiaa track that is deeply rooted in this intense, emotive world that I thought I had left behind. And yet it manages to draw me in, speak to me, remind me why I once loved this sound. It’s a wake-up call, a realisation that perhaps I’ve been too quick to judge and distance myself too much from something that still has a lot to offer.
What strikes me about Goia Paranoia is how cleverly they blend elements from across the spectrum of heavy music. The foundation is classic hard rock, flirting with modern metal and a nod to the rebellious spirit of punk. You’ll also catch a hint of the raw heart of grunge and the laid-back groove of stoner rock. The robust riffs also bring surprising melodicism to bear; the metal influence delivers raw power and the whole thing is topped off with anthemic vocals that howl at the moon. Add in some nu-metal vibes, bluesy sludge and intricate and riotous guitar work and you get a sound that’s as dynamic as it is devastating.
I now realise I’ve been missing out. “Black Out” is a haunting reminder of how electrifying heavy music can be. For diehard metalheads, it’s a feast; goths will get lost in its dark atmosphere, stoners will warm to its heady yet tough charm, classic rock audiences will find solace in its rhythms, and industrial fans will appreciate its raw, apocalyptic edge. But if, like me, you haven’t been in the swing of things for a while and are thinking about getting back into it, this track is the perfect way to get started.
