NEWARK, NJ — In preparation for the upcoming school year, Mercy House of the Archdiocese of Newark successfully distributed more than 500 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to children at multiple locations this month. The back-to-school giveaway events took place in Newark, Jersey City and Elizabeth, providing much-needed supplies to local families.
Over 300 backpacks were distributed in Newark on August 13, another 100 in Jersey City on August 15, and another 100 in Elizabeth on August 16. Each backpack was filled with essential classroom supplies such as pencils, crayons, and glue sticks, and came in a variety of colors to suit the preferences of the children who received it.
“Mercy House lives out the Catholic Church’s mission to help all those in need. In this case, we knew families desperately needed things they couldn’t afford for the new school year, so we made sure they got everything and more,” said Cheryl A. Riley, Mercy House director. She thanked local archdiocesan parishes and outside organizations for their donations that made the event possible.
In addition to school supplies, participating families received free Italian gelato and some won raffle prizes including dolls, toy cars and water toys. The gifts gave families a moment of joy and relief as they prepared for the new school year.
Founded in 2018, Mercy House provides non-perishable food, clothing, baby items, and job and housing assistance to those in need. Its three locations in Newark, Jersey City, and Elizabeth serve approximately 300 people each week.
