Police said four children under the age of 15 were shot, one of them seriously injured, after they were caught in a stolen car in Minneapolis over the weekend.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said in a press conference that shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday, while officers were responding to several ShotSpotter calls in Minneapolis, they were also notified of a 911 call reporting a vehicle in which several people had been shot.
There were five children in the car, four of whom had gunshot wounds: two injured boys and two injured girls, O’Hara said. The children were all between the ages of 11 and 14 and were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. O’Hara said one of the girls was shot in the head and is in critical but stable condition. The other three teens were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
A fifth child in the car was unharmed. O’Hara said he was arrested at the scene when the car was discovered to be stolen, but was released to his parents after officers determined he was 11 years old.
The names of the injured children were not released.

Children were shot by another driver while driving around in a stolen Kia
According to preliminary police investigations, the teens were driving the stolen Kia when a dark-colored sedan followed them and someone inside the car shot at them with “fully automatic rifle fire.” O’Hara said about 30 pieces of ballistic evidence were recovered at the scene, although more shots may have been fired.
The shooter fled the scene and police made no arrests.
Police said no charges would be filed against the five teens due to state age restrictions.
In another press conference, O’Hara said the shooting was “preventable” because Hennepin County prosecutors could have arrested “at least two” of the teens in the days before the shooting after their respective cases were forwarded for indictment on Aug. 9. O’Hara did not name the two teens or provide the charges.
