People imagined all sorts of global nightmare scenarios in the months leading up to January 1, 2000, but none of them was as absurd as the assumption of Year 2000 from director Kyle Mooney, A24’s new disaster comedy.
Set on New Year’s Eve 1999, Year 2000 tells the story of a group of teenagers who want to celebrate the new millennium by throwing (or at least attending) the party of a lifetime. Even though everyone has heard about the Y2K bug, all Eli (Jaeden Martell), Danny (Julian Dennison), and Laura (Rachel Zegler) can think about is how they might meet at the party and how this night could change their lives forever. When the power goes out at midnight, the kids quickly laugh it off, thinking that maybe someone is just playing a prank. But they have no idea what to do when a few devices seemingly come to life and promptly try to kill them.
Strangely, much of the madness in Year 2000The trailer for evokes the real-life panic that drove people to buy toilet paper and water en masse, fearful that a programming error would bring down our technological infrastructure. But the film seems to be drifting so far into the absurd and silly that it might be a little nerve-wracking when it hits theaters on December 6.
