Attentive viewers of the Democratic National Convention witnessed a touching moment between President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris just after Biden finished his bittersweet speech to the crowd in Chicago on Monday night.
Harris had just finished applauding with her husband, Doug Emhoff, and First Lady Jill Biden when she walked up to the president, hugged him, and said something incomprehensible to him. While their exchange was drowned out by the crowd’s thunderous applause, some lip readings shed some light on what Harris was telling him.
“Harris could be seen saying, among other things, to Biden as she hugged him on stage, ‘I love you, Joe, I really do,'” wrote CNN chief reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere on X (formerly Twitter), while video-based politics portal The Recount noted that Harris said, “I love you so much.”
Although neither has confirmed the statement, numerous social media users claim Harris also told Biden, “You made me cry.” Their interaction followed a momentous speech in which Biden, who dropped out of the race in July, passed the proverbial baton to Harris.
“Voting Kamala was my very first decision before I was nominated, and it was the best decision of my entire career,” he said. “She’s tough, she’s experienced, and she has tremendous integrity. She will be a president we can all be proud of.”
Biden performed disastrously in the June debate against Donald Trump, and in the weeks that followed he made several public missteps that failed to pacify voters. His poll numbers eventually plummeted, and more and more Democratic pundits called for his resignation even before he officially resigned.
“I have five months left in my presidency, and I still have a lot of work to do,” he said Monday. “It has been the honor of my life to serve you as president. I love my job, but I love my country even more. All this talk about how angry I am at the people who told me to resign is not true.”
Harris recently chose Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, appearing to hit a sore spot with Republicans by sending the message that her tactics were “weird.”
As a hearing-impaired person forced to lip-read, Kamala embraced Biden with the exact words you just mentioned:
