I’m currently watching Black Myth: Wukong climb the Steam all-time charts with 2.2 million concurrent players, overtaking every single game on the list except PUBG as Chinese gamers flock to support the title. Oddly, no test codes were issued for the PS5 and some were initially concerned about performance issues, but at least it’s… out there.
You might be wondering why Black Myth: Wukong isn’t available for Xbox Series X or S and when the game might come out. Well, I have good news and bad news.
The good news is: No, Sony is not buying a year of exclusivity or something similar from Game Science to keep the title off the Xbox for a long time.
The bad news is that Xbox seems to have once again run into a situation like with Baldur’s Gate 3: Due to issues with the Xbox Series S not being able to run split-screen co-op, Xbox had to wait until December for the release, rather than August like PC and PlayStation.
Now the same thing is happening again. No split screen in this single player game, but a technical issue. Game Science issued a statement on the situation back in June after the Xbox logo was removed from trailers for the game:
“We are currently optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards,” Game Science said, “so it will not be released at the same time as the other platforms. We apologize for the delay and are trying to minimize the wait time for Xbox users. We will announce the release date once it meets our quality standards.”
While it’s not confirmed that this is due to the Series S, you might be able to imagine it after seeing the visual splendor of Black Myth: Wukong and knowing that Microsoft’s requirement that a game be released simultaneously for Series S and Series X has caused problems before, and not just with Baldur’s Gate.
The Series S is a budget entry into this generation of consoles, but “this generation of consoles” is a bit of an asterisk because it’s underpowered compared to the X and S. Usually that works out fine, but now in two high-profile cases, a major game is coming to PC and PlayStation in the years following, but not to Xbox. And no, there isn’t even a delayed release date for the Xbox version of Wukong, as it’s launching without any of that information being released, which may not even be finalized internally yet.
Given the prevalence of PC gaming in China and the low adoption of Xbox… in most places outside the US, it’s probably not a high priority either. It’s probably coming at some point, but not today and not anytime soon. Xbox needs to fix the problem so it doesn’t happen again, but right now they’re kind of stuck with the Series S.
