Winston-Salem Street School is pleased to welcome 76 high school students and 43 youth program students during the first week of the 2024-25 school year.
Students who would otherwise have fallen through the cracks because they were unable to succeed in the public school system have chosen to graduate and begin a new chapter in their lives through this unique program. In 20 years, over 350 graduates have realized their dream of completing high school and determining their career path after choosing Street School’s programs.
This year, school leaders expect nothing less and are excited to serve more students than ever before. This week, students who had almost given up on school will experience the supportive and caring environment of the Street School.
Winston-Salem Street School is a private, nonprofit school that serves high school students in Forsyth County who have not been successful in public school. The reasons for this are varied: behavioral issues, mental health issues and anxiety, bullying, teen parenting, poverty, broken homes and families, etc. This group of students is welcomed at Street School and given a second chance to graduate from high school and a “path of hope” to a better future.
Since 2004, over 300 students have not only graduated from Street School, but have also received assistance with food and supplies, counseling, legal assistance, and help preparing for life after high school, such as continuing education and career preparation. Dana Van Horn currently serves as the board president of the Winston-Salem Street School.
