Valley Children’s enters the commercial and residential construction business.
The children’s hospital, which has faced intense public criticism over the salaries of its executives, plans to build a sprawling campus around its current location in Madera County with apartments, retail stores, recreational space and a hotel.
The big picture: The new development, called “The Hill,” was announced on a website Valley Children’s recently launched.
- According to the website, The Hill will be a 445-acre campus that “combines functionality, sustainability and compassion, enhancing the overall experience and quality of life in our region.”
- Renderings on the website show that the campus will surround the hospital between Children’s Blvd. and Highway 41.
- In total, the campus will have 110,000 square meters of multi-purpose space and 90,000 square meters of space for healthcare and medical practices.
Go deeper: The plan is to build 348 residential units on campus, including townhouses and apartments ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments.
- Valley Children’s promises to open over 50 retail stores in a “village-like setting” that will be located next to a grocery store and shops for other essentials.
- A recreational area called “The Yard” offers entertainment, green spaces, walking trails, exercise stations and other areas for recreation and rejuvenation. This includes 22.5 kilometers of walking trails.
- The hospital will also build a 173-room hotel, pool areas and conference and event space at the heart of the campus.
What they say: “The Hill’s five thriving districts will serve as an economic catalyst for the region, providing choice and new amenities to the community,” the website states. “By enhancing the campus with purpose-built retail space, dining, residential and entertainment options, we are enriching the experience for employees, patients, families and the community.”
