The Tennessee Titans have signed three new players as part of the reduction in their 53-man roster.
The team acquired linebacker Ernest Jones in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams, while the team claimed pass rusher Ali Gaye from the Houston Texans and defensive back Julius Wood from the Dallas Cowboys off waivers.
According to team reporter Jim Wyatt, Jones will wear number 53, Gaye will wear number 59 and Wood will wear number 24 on his jersey.
Jones, 24, will be allowed to keep the jersey number he wore the past two seasons with the Rams. He began his career wearing No. 50, which he has since changed to No. 53. Jones comes to the Titans and is expected to be the team’s starting inside linebacker alongside Kenneth Murray Jr., who transferred to Tennessee as a free agent from the Los Angeles Chargers this spring.
Gaye, 25, spent three years at LSU and went undrafted last year. After the draft, he signed with the Texans and spent all of last season on the practice squad. He wore No. 90 during training camp with the Texans, but is now switching to No. 59.
Wood, 23, played three seasons for East Carolina before going undrafted this spring. He led his team in tackles the past two seasons, making him a priority free agent when he signed with the Cowboys after going undrafted in the draft. He joins a group of experienced defensive backs led by Amani Hooker, Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs.
With their numbers finalized, the new Titans trio will begin practicing with the team this week in preparation for the season opener, which will be on the road against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, September 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
