(WBFF) — Governor Wes Moore today announced up to $20 million in grants for two education programs.
The recipients of the money are the tutoring program Saga Education and the online learning tool ASSISTments, the governor’s statement said.

The awards are the first to be given through the Maryland Partnership for Proven Programs, an initiative launched in February by Moore and Arnold Ventures to support programs with proven progress in economic mobility and career progression.
“These programs have proven to be successful,” said Governor Moore. “We have seen the remarkable impact they have in enabling young people from all backgrounds to reach their full potential. That’s why we are proud to partner with Arnold Ventures. Together, we will create pathways to work, wages and prosperity for the people of Maryland, grow our economy and leave no one behind.”
Through this program, Arnold Ventures will match the $10 million provided by the Maryland State Department of Education – money that will directly benefit the selected programs over the next four years.
“Effective tutoring is backed by research and data when it comes to addressing the pandemic’s impact on student learning,” said Dr. Carey M. Wright, state superintendent of schools. “This investment in our students will pay off as we scale up successful strategies and lead more students to better academic outcomes. We are excited about the benefits of this partnership.”
Both Saga Education and ASSISTments have brought about “significant and sustained improvements in students’ mathematics achievement,” the governor’s statement said.
In the first year, Saga Education’s tutoring will be offered in the city of Baltimore, while ASSISTments will be available in Baltimore and Charles counties.
