PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — No matter how you slice it, Philadelphia knows how to make a hoagie.
Jessica Boyington tests three more legendary sandwich shops in this week’s Top 6.
MARINUCCI’S – Port Richmond
At Marinucci’s, a pound of Dietz and Watson meat is hand-cut onto each individual hoagie. There are three locations, so you don’t have to go far to try it out.
What I loved:
-The Grace Marie (turkey, imported ham, Cooper Sharp, roasted red peppers and all the toppings on a grain bun)
– The Nucci (an upscale Italian dish with spicy provolone, prosciutto and roasted red peppers.)
POE’S SANDWICH JOINT (at Human Robot Brewery) – North Philadelphia
If you’re in the mood for a cold beer and a thick sandwich, North Philly’s Human Robot Brewery should be on your list. Grab a summer beer brewed on-site, stick your head in the window of Poe’s Sandwich Joint, and let the guys make you one of their specialty hoagies.
What I loved:
-The Whopper (Italian with sopressata, pepperoni, pepper ham, rocket, roasted red peppers, balsamic mayonnaise and hand-pulled mozzarella)
-The Hamilton (chicken schnitzel with Cooper Sharp, bacon, French fries, spring onions and homemade ranch dressing)
JACK’S PLACE – Tacony
Jack’s Place has been on the same corner for 31 years, and the only thing more loyal than the customers who come here every Friday hoping to win a giant sandwich are the women who own and operate it. Every day, they prepare roast pork, turkey, meatballs, cutlets and gravy in this kitchen.
What I loved:
-The hot roast pork with turnip greens
-The original Italian (with long hot oil)
-The Meatball Hoagie with spicy Provolone
-EVERY hoagie with a chicken schnitzel on top
