(MENAFN – Live Mint) A sub-inspector of Uttar Pradesh police has been suspended in Kannauj after an audio recording of him demanding potatoes as a bribe to allegedly settle a case went viral on social media.
According to a report by news agency PTI, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ajay Kumar said the audio recording showed that Sub-Inspector Ramkripal, in-charge of Chapunna branch of Saurikh police station in Kannauj, allegedly tried to accept bribe, about which the Chhibramau circle collector had sent a report.
Taking cognizance of the matter, Kannauj Police Commissioner Amit Kumar Anand suspended the Ramkripal outpost in-charge with immediate effect, the ASP said.
In the audio recording, a person was heard saying that he could give only two kilograms of potatoes to settle the case, while Ramkripal expressed his displeasure that a deal for five kilograms of potatoes had been agreed upon earlier, he added.
The man was then heard saying that he was unable to meet the sub-inspector’s demand due to the low income from his business.
He reiterated that he would give only two kilograms of potatoes, but Ramkripal insisted on giving him the remaining three kilograms of potatoes later.
A preliminary inquiry for departmental action has been handed over to Circle Officer (City) Kamlesh Kumar.
In Kanpur, eight police officers, including four sub-inspectors, were suspended for allegedly filing a fake FIR with serious charges of trespass, extortion and sedition against eight innocent persons and sent to jail, a senior police official said on Friday.
All the police officers who were suspended on Thursday were posted at Ghatampur Kotwali police station.
According to police, preliminary investigations against the eight officers revealed that the allegations were true.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (South) Ravindra Kumar on Friday told PTI that Ramadevi, wife of Om Prakash Yadav, who was detained in a land dispute, had personally submitted a written complaint against the policemen.
