2,060 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as Mormons, recently participated in the worldwide largest speed dating event.
It took place last weekend as part of the 2024 Utah Area Young Single Adults (YSA) Conference in Salt Lake City, USA.
Speed dating was a popular part of the first YSA conference last year and resulted in one marriage.
To break the record, participants had to complete a speed dating session with at least 20 people for three minutes each.
They were supervised by volunteer conference participants who ensured that everyone participated actively.
The room was divided into two halves, with the 18-28 year olds on one side and the 25-35 year olds on the other. Anyone between 25 and 28 could choose the side they preferred.
Ultimately, 42 people were disqualified for abandoning the date early or not completing their 20-date logbook, bringing the total number of speed daters to a record-breaking 2,060.
They far exceeded the previous record of 964 set in Ireland in 2019.
Another record was broken at the two-day conference: most contributions to a greeting card.
A giant card honoring the 100th birthday of Church President Russell M. Nelson was signed by 31,384 people, surpassing the previous record by more than 10,000.
The oversized map was located in the convention area and participants could submit messages both in person and online, which were then transferred to the map by Church members present on site.
Guinness World Record judge Michael Empric presented both certificates to Elder Kevin Pearson, a church representative who focuses on young members.
The YSA conference is a place where Mormons between the ages of 18 and 35 “can strengthen their faith in Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ,” the Utah Region President’s Office wrote in a letter.
The event’s activities included keynote speeches, classes, concerts, dances and other evening entertainment.
