WINNEMUCCA, Nevada (KOLO) – The Bureau of Land Management is implementing temporary closures of Black Rock Playa.
The temporary closures affect public lands in the immediate vicinity of the Burning Man site and are intended to protect public resources and public safety in the Black Rock Desert.
The closure will last approximately 66 days and will be implemented in two phases:
- Phase 1 encompasses approximately 9,941 acres, or less than three percent of the Black Rock Desert playa.
- Phase 2 includes approximately 51,149 acres, or 33 percent, of the Black Rock Desert Playa, but public access to the remaining 67 percent of the playa outside the temporarily closed area remains open for occasional recreational use.
Future dates for Phase 1 and Phase 2 closures through fiscal year 2027 are:

- Phase 1 – July 25 to September 28 (66 days)
- Phase 2 – August 19 to September 7 (20 days)
2025
- Phase 1 – July 24 to September 27 (66 days)
- Phase 2 – August 18 to September 6 (20 days)
2026
- Phase 1 – July 30 to October 3 (66 days)
- Phase 2 – August 24 to September 12 (20 days)
2027
- Phase 1 – July 29 to October 2 (66 days)
- Phase 2 – August 23 to September 11 (20 days)
