The “Mormon moms” of TikTok have carved out their own unique corner of the platform, but who are they and why have they become social media famous?
Mormon are a religious and cultural group that is part of the Latter-day Saint movement. It was founded in New York in the 1820s and its followers believe that Jesus is the Savior of the world.
Interest in Mormon community life has increased recently thanks to the release of the trailer for the upcoming US Hulu show. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, Increasing the visibility of some famous Mormon influencers on TikTok.
Mormon mothers Taylor Paul and Whitney Leavitt are both avid TikTok users, sharing everything from clips about their family life to viral dance videos.
Its contents may surprise members of a culture generally considered conservative, but this is far from the only shocking scandal that has come to light.
In 2023, Paul was arrested for assault and domestic violence after her 5-year-old daughter was hit by an overturned chair. Paul took a plea deal.
Nevertheless, her number of followers on TikTok continues to grow and she has been criticized by some members of the religion for accusing her of portraying the church in a bad light.
The Hulu show will tackle the Mormon “momfluencer” viral sex scandal that erupted on TikTok in 2022 when Paul announced she was getting a divorce and had been doing some “soft swinging” with other married friends in the group.
The reality show will also feature other Mormon influencers, including Demi Engemann, Jennifer Affleck, Jessi Ngatikaura, Layla Wessel, Mayci Neeley and Mikayla Mathews.
All six episodes of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives Premieres in the US on Friday, September 6th.
