Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes Spock (Ethan Peck) in a direction no other series has gone before. The unrequited love that sister Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett Roddenberry) felt for Leonard Nimoy’s Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series was briefly addressed in Strange New Worlds, and although the couple split when Jess Bush’s version of Chapel chose her career over their relationship, their bond remains strong.
But first, a romance and engagement developed between Spock and T’Pring (Gia Sandhu) that was never discussed in the original series. In fact, the two hadn’t seen each other since childhood. Strange New Worlds went in a different direction, giving the couple a romance from the start, but it didn’t last.
But there was another potential love interest for Spock in the original series – Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). Although the romance never came to fruition, there was clearly a strong attraction between the two, and the relationship was explored in JJ Abrams’ Kelvin timeline films. It went through a number of trials and even ended briefly before the pair found their way back together in Star Trek: Beyond.
With Cillian O’Sullivan joining Strange New Worlds in season three as Roger Korby, we know the series will explore the relationship between him and Nurse Chapel, which doesn’t leave much room for Spock. So will this be an opportunity for Spock and Uhura?
So far, there doesn’t seem to be any romantic tension between Uhura and Spock, and she’s considerably younger in this version of Star Trek, basically just finding her way as a Starfleet officer. Spock is a higher-ranking officer, which could lead to potential problems, but that didn’t stop the couple in the Chris Pine-directed films, when Zachary Quinto’s Spock and Zoe Saldana’s Uhura had a serious relationship that seemed to work, although some fans might disagree.
If Strange New Worlds decides not to pursue this relationship, hopefully they’ll still get Spock together with someone before he goes back to being the loner he was in the original series. He’s got plenty of time to become a limited Vulcan on the Enterprise. Right now, he could use some love from someone who won’t break his heart.
