The team have written an apology after receiving considerable criticism for Tuesday’s front page story about Mason Greenwood (22). The front page was titled: “OM-Greenwood: Unconditional Love“, which, as the French media admits, sparked a storm of indignation.
The French media has detailed that the first three pages (including the cover) will be about the player’s launch in Marseille. The team continues: “If a front page is so misunderstood, it is a failure”, and that “this “love” is not ours and never was.”
The newspaper continues: “Beyond the Greenwood case, the fight against all forms of violence against women has long been our concern… On Monday’s front page, we unfortunately did not find the right words to continue this important fight on and off the field. This makes us sad and regretful.”
Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault in 2022 after videos, images, and audio recordings of these allegations were posted online.
In 2023, the charges were dropped after prosecutors said key witnesses had refused to cooperate and new material had emerged, meaning there was no longer a realistic prospect of a conviction. The player has denied all allegations against him and returned to football last year.
