Although almsgiving has become a part of the general human experience, not everyone can say they know it first-hand, or even understand its appeal. There are regions of the world where a significant portion of the adult population will not deign to help people they do not know. Some African countries fall into this category.
There are various reasons why people tend to be generous. These include wealth of resources, religion, or simply social norms.
There are regions in the world where people tend to help each other because such acts are deeply rooted in their socio-economic psyche. However, in some regions the exact opposite is true because people should be responsible for their own destiny.
According to the Charity Aid Foundation (CAF) World Giving Index, in 2022, 4.2 billion people donated money or time or helped someone they didn’t know. This figure represents 72% of the world’s adult population. However, that leaves 28% of people who didn’t help anyone by donating their time or money.
As mentioned above, people who profess religious beliefs tend to be more generous.
“People who say religion is an important part of their daily lives have a higher total giving index than those who say it is not important,” The CAF report states:
“The largest gap is in sub-Saharan Africa (41 versus 35), while in Europe there is no difference between the index values of the two groups (38 each).“, it adds.
With that in mind, here are the 10 African countries with the least generous people.
