Apple TV+ is truly an underrated streamer. I think the platform has a lot to offer, but sometimes it is difficult to compete with the bigger companies like Netflix and Max. They dominate the playing field. But that doesn’t mean you won’t find great content on Apple TV+, like shrinkage.
And that’s why you’re here, right? You saw the comedy, you liked it, and now you want to fill your time with something else while we wait shrinkage Season 2. Well, it won’t be long now! The second season premieres on October 16. But it’s still a while away, which means you have plenty of time to watch something new! Here are 5 good Apple TV+ shows like shrinkage to check it out now.
shrinkage focuses on one of the biggest challenges life can throw at you, the loss of a spouse (Jimmy) and a parent (his daughter Alice). Many people can unfortunately relate to this situation. The series focuses on what grief looks like for different people, how to find a way to overcome it and have a strong support system behind you.
On Apple TV+ AttemptThe British series focuses on another challenge that many people face, the question of whether to have a child. The comedy-drama revolves around Nikki and Jason, a couple who decide to adopt when their other options don’t work out. They have to overcome many challenges and ups and downs to get what they want.
The show does a great job of balancing drama and humor, which I think Shrinking does too. You’ll definitely get the same feeling when you watch it. Attempt. Season 4 just premiered in May 2024 and there is no information yet on whether there will be a fifth season.
During his grief, Jimmy decides to treat his patients’ problems in an unconventional way. Instead of just listening to them and helping them make their own decisions, he starts telling them what to do. And sometimes the scenarios are funny. Of course, in the world of psychology, this is a big no-no.
When we reach a certain age, we are often expected to behave in a certain way. For example, when you approach midlife, you are expected to be more calm and not do anything crazy. Well, sometimes we just need that and that is what Platonic on Apple TV+.
When two former best friends reunite near midlife, they find themselves in some hilarious situations. The first season is currently streaming and the series has been renewed for season 2.
One of the newest additions to Apple TV+ this year is Sunny starring Rashida Jones. Her character Suzie lost her husband and son in what was supposedly a plane crash. However, she believes there is more to the story because their disappearance is too mysterious. And while this show has a crime/are they really dead element that Shrinking doesn’t, there are many themes around grief and loss.
Of course, Suzie is grieving the loss of her family, and we see how that affects her. And how she deals with it – or doesn’t deal with it. Trying to find answers to the disappearance of her husband and son gives her a life’s work of sorts, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t struggle with painful emotions. Just like Jimmy. Plus, Jones is great in some of those lighter moments that add a humorous touch to a dramatic show. The season finale is scheduled for Wednesday, September 4.
Evil Sisters is definitely one of my favorite shows at the moment, and you absolutely have to check it out if you shrinkage! Again, this is a much more dramatic version and a crime thriller. It starts with the death of one of the Garvey sisters’ husbands, John Paul. And we spend the season trying to figure out who killed him. It was definitely one of them because the other sisters didn’t like him because he was emotionally abusing their sister and ruining their own lives as well.
This may seem like a strange addition to the list, but hear me out. Of course, this is also about grief and loss, but what I also love about this show is the portrayal of how strong the sisters’ bond is. They are there for each other no matter what. And even though Jimmy goes off the rails, his friends are there for him and Alice. And when Sharon Hogan is involved, you know there’s going to be plenty of sarcasm. And the other characters have plenty of it, too! Season two premieres November 13, 2024 on Apple TV+.
Last but not least, there is another new Apple TV+ series, Evil Monkey starring Vince Vaughn. I think the actor and Jason Segel kind of have the same mannerisms and Vaughn just reminds me of the shrinking actor. So, I think if you watch this Evil Monkeyyou will get the same feeling. It also helps that the executive producer of the new show is also the same EP as shrinkage.
Learning this, I can definitely see where that perfect balance of drama and comedy comes into play in both productions. Sorry guys, I only recommend crime dramas here. But they are really interesting, even if shrinkage does not fall into this category. But still, if you look at these different genres, you will find similarities. And that is whatt Evil Monkey does that too. New episodes will be released on Wednesdays until the finale on October 9.
