PUEBLO WEST – Two schools in Pueblo West were evacuated and classes closed early, according to Pueblo School District 70.
According to the district, both Liberty Point Elementary and Liberty Point International School were evacuated and dismissed around 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The district told our newsroom that while there was no emergency, precautions had been taken to remove the children from class.
A problem at a Black Hills Energy substation in the area caused lights to go out at both school sites. I checked with Black Hills Energy and a spokesperson told me the fire was a result of the power outages.
The fire, which was reported shortly before 11:00 a.m. at the Pueblo West substation, is now under control and Black Hills Energy employees are assessing the damage and making the necessary repairs. According to the energy company, there were no injuries in the fire.
Parents were contacted by the district and asked to pick up their children and bring photo ID to pick them up. There would be no buses for any of the schools on Wednesday afternoon.
