DOTHAN, Alabama (WTVY) – The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) recently received nearly $3 million from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to fund resources related to maternal health.
The CDC’s $2.975 million Enhancing Review and Surveillance to Eliminate Maternal Mortality (ERASE MM) grant will support ADPH’s Maternal Mortality Review Program (MMRP) over the next five years to expand support for the State of Alabama’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee (AL-MMRC).
These funds will expand AL-MMRC’s data capabilities and reduce the time the committee spends preparing reports, which in turn will provide staff with greater ability to obtain records and interview family members and increase their outreach to educate the public about maternal mortality prevention.
“The Alabama Legislature has generously supported the MMRP since its inception with staffing, educational activities, the AL-MMRC and the Maternal Autopsy Program. We appreciate their continued support in our work to improve maternal health in Alabama,” said Carolyn Miller, director of the Perinatal Division of the Bureau of Family Health Services.
Established in 2018, the AL-MMRC is comprised of several state medical and professional experts and stakeholders familiar with maternal health and resources available in the state. The committee meets several times a year to review records and sources related to maternal deaths that occur during pregnancy or up to one year after delivery or death, to determine if the death was preventable, and to make recommendations to prevent future deaths.
