TUXEDO, NEW YORK — Every year from August to October, Tuxedo Park transforms into a land of fantasy and ingenuity.
The New York Renaissance Faire is celebrating its 47th anniversary and is kicking off with “Pirate Weekend.” The theme is a recreation of a 16th-century English village. Characters from history, literature and folklore mingle with the visitors without losing their roles. Daring archers, swordsmen and jousting warriors duel for honor and attention. Meanwhile, musicians and performing artists spread out across the grounds. Queen Elizabeth I looks forward to holding court here every year. She encourages guests to “come to enjoy arts and crafts, maybe come to enjoy shows, drink a little mead and generally lose yourself in the imagination.”
Melissa Arleth is the star and creator of the show “Cirque du Sewer,” which features unique acrobatic cats and rats. She says the New York Renaissance Faire stands out compared to similar events. “Many years ago, this place was a botanical garden and it’s a beautiful walk through the woods, in addition to everything they did to build these beautiful stages and sets,” Arleth said.
Food vendors and artisans round out the immersive event with period-accurate foods and jewelry. The New York Renaissance Faire is open weekends and Labor Day through October 6.
