New York Giants star wide receiver Malik Nabers has announced his new jersey number.
The No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft wore No. 9 throughout spring training, training camp and the preseason.
However, the rookie wideout announced that he will wear the number 1, which is a big surprise considering it hasn’t been worn in nearly 90 years.
In the process, the Giants had to retire Ray Flaherty’s number. This is significant because Flaherty’s number was the first in professional football history to be retired.
Nabers requested and received permission from the Flaherty family to wear the jersey number.
“Thank you to the Flaherty family for allowing me to wear No. 1 for the New York Giants. I understand the responsibility and will do everything in my power to honor the Flaherty family and this organization. I will wear the number with great pride. I can’t wait for the season to begin,” Nabers said in a team statement.
Nabers is expected to be an incredible immediate asset to the Giants’ offense, which needs a catalyst from the wide receiver department.
