Renault: Latest news, results, drivers and car updates for 2021
The Renault F1 team first competed in Formula 1 in 1977 and even supplied engines from 1983. During its first stint in the sport, it won two F1 World Championships, both with Fernando Alonso. It left the sport after the 2011 season, but found its way back in 2016.
Another significant event occurred at Renault’s debut, namely the introduction of turbo engines. Renault’s 2020 driver line-up consists of former Red Bull star Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon.
Renault’s iconic yet modern yellow and black livery will change from 2021 when the team changes its name to Alpine F1. The possible livery is reminiscent of the French tricolor. Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso will drive for the team in 2021.
The Renault logo is synonymous with its road cars and its racing team. The French team’s logo consists of a diamond.
Successes on the track
Renault’s first victory and its first podium finish both came at the same race. Jean-Pierre Jabouille won the 1979 French Grand Prix and Rene Arnoux finished third.
Their results were mixed, there were numerous dropouts, and after 1985 they withdrew as a team.
The Renault F1 team returned to the fray in 2002, taking over from the Benetton team. Renault did not win again until 2003, with a single victory by Fernando Alonso.
Renault F1 went winless for another year in 2004 before the momentum changed dramatically in 2005 when Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella dominated proceedings and took the title. The pair repeated the same feat in 2006, with Alonso finishing at least fifth throughout the season.
To date, Renault has achieved 35 race wins and 103 podium finishes in 400 race starts. The team has collected 1,777 points during its legendary career in F1.
The team withdrew again in 2011 and rejoined in 2016. Their drivers that year were Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer. When Magnussen moved to Haas, Nico Hülkenberg moved from Force India to the French team.
Later, when Palmer’s contract was terminated, Carlos Sainz was loaned to them from Toro Rosso. Hülkenberg and Sainz drove together in the 2018 season until Sainz moved to McLaren in 2019.
As part of another series of driver changes, Renault’s 2021 line-up will consist of Esteban Ocon and the returning Fernando Alonso.
Alonso will replace Daniel Ricciardo, who is moving to McLaren for the 2021 season.
When did Renault last win in F1?
Renault’s last victory in F1 was the 2008 Japanese Grand Prix, won by Fernando Alonso.

Renault charities and foundations
In response to the British government’s call for help, several F1 teams joined forces in the fight against COVID-19. Renault was one of the seven F1 teams that helped produce the necessary medical equipment, which is crucial in the fight against the virus.
The initiative was called “Project Pitlane” and even envisaged a collaboration between Renault and Red Bull at its British plant in Milton Keynes.
