The latest trailer for SNK’s upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves was for none other than Terry Bogard, the poster boy for the franchise and a character we knew would be in the game on the day of the announcement. It’s fun to see Terry in action and all, but this trailer didn’t bring much new content to the City of the Wolves discussion…or did it?
The keen eye of Rooflemonger has spotted a whole host of Easter eggs and possible character clues, as there’s more to Terry’s trailer than meets the eye. Read on to see what was shown and who these clues could point to.
Although we’ve seen Mr. Bogard before in City of the Wolves, this is the first time we’ve seen the updated version of his classic stage, The Freight Express. This iconic arena has been featured in several SNK fighting games and pits contestants against each other on a moving train as it chugs through a desert.
With both the background and foreground in motion and the audience’s attention focused primarily on the warring fighters, The Freight Express is the perfect place to sneak in secrets, allusions, and Easter eggs, and that’s clearly exactly what the developers have done.
Despite all the distractions, you may have noticed the distinctive yellow ducks waddling in a line towards the train. These are a direct reference to Duck King, a charismatic character who didn’t appear in many SNK fighters but was frequently requested by fans.
Are his ducks a direct indication that he’ll be added to the playable roster, or simply a nostalgic nod to longtime fans? The same could be asked about the Mr. Rushmore-style mountain that passes by in the background of the stage.
Four different characters appear pretty clearly on the mountain, one character appears in the Japanese trailer on a passing train, and Rooflemonger hints at one or two more potential characters based on less direct leads. See it all in the full video here:
