LAKE MARY, Florida. – Lake Mary’s quest for the Little League World Series title became more challenging Monday night after a 4-1 loss to Texas. The team now faces elimination but remains determined to continue on its path.
Lake Mary isn’t the first Central Florida team to compete on this big stage. In 2001, the Apopka All-Stars made it to the Little League World Series in Williamsport and eventually won the U.S. championship before losing to Japan in the world championship game.
Now the Lake Mary All-Stars are following in Apopka’s footsteps and hoping to take home the championship title. We spoke to a former player from that Apopka team who knows how much is at stake in this tournament.
Justin LaFavers, a member of the 2001 Apopka team, reflected on the valuable lessons the Lake Mary players will surely learn during their time in Williamsport.

“They’re going to learn how to deal with pressure,” LaFavers said. “They’re going to learn how to fight through these things, how to fight through distractions.”
Lake Mary is the fourth Central Florida team to reach the Little League World Series and the first since 2005. Despite their struggles on the mound Monday night that resulted in a 4-1 loss, the team still has a lot to look forward to.
“For me, just being out there with all the kids I grew up with, the amount of work, blood, sweat and tears we put into practice every day,” LaFavers said. “To go out there and experience that, to play on national television, to have people cheering for us. The whole thing was pretty remarkable.”
Lake Mary now needs a win when it faces Metro tomorrow at 7 p.m. The team must win four games in a row to reach the championship.
